Labor, Delivery, and Birth

Well Little Emily Grace you have arrived into this world so this post will be a quick recap of the events of yesterday… labor, delivery, and birth.

Mommies water broke on it’s own this morning at 06:30 and it all started from there. We were pleasantly surprised to find out that our nurse for the day was also a member of our church. Sue was great to have by our side all day long as your mommy was in labor. After a couple hours of working through contractions, mommy took a dip in the whirlpool to relax and move along. After that her doctor started some medication to help speed along her contractions. As the day went along she was giving some medication to help deal with the pain and she kept breathing through the contractions well. She was such a trooper all day long. Holy cow she made major progress and is getting close to 10 centimeters. After some more pain medication as the first set wore off and some large contractions that were now close together and lasting a good bit of time and she has made it to 10 centimeters and ready to start pushing. The nurse that we have had all day was closing in on the end of her shift and really wanted to be here to see the birth of this child with us, in fact she stayed on after her shift for a while as Erin pushed. After and hour and a half of pushing and seeing little progress in the decent of the baby Erin’s doctor advised us that she felt this baby was not going to be able to be pushed out and suggested that we should go with a cesarian section. After we made all of the correct consents the swarm of nurses rushed in to help get Erin ready… wow this team at Mid Michigan works so well together and make you feel like so comfortable and cared for. It took an additional hour and a half to get Erin fully prepped and in for the c-section. During that time frame Erin still had to push through the pain. It was during this time that I started to break down seeing Erin in all of this pain and wanting to just be over for her, she did so well all day and worked so hard. Off to the operating room in a set of very snazzy purple scrubs. I was able to sit behind right at Erin’s head during the procedure. I stood up to view the process over the drape… okay that is nature at is best. As our doctor was pulling the baby out I was the first to see the little one and yelled out ‘it’s a girl’, and quickly sat back down to give Erin a kiss and say ‘it’s an Emily’. God is so amazing and has truly blessed us with this precious child. Next thing I know they are asking me if I would like to cut the cord. After a couple of quick pictures in the operating room I followed Emily off to the nursery for all of her checks while the team sewed Erin up. I could not believe that this little one was 9 lbs. 5 oz and 20 1/2 inches long. Her little head was 14 inches and her chest was 14 1/2 inches long. Her APGAR scores were 9 and 9 so she was perky right from the get go. After getting all of the vitals taken on Emily and a ’spit shine’ as the nurse called it, Emily and I walked back down to the room to meet up with mommy. Now just some time to relax with Erin and baby Emily. Life is so amazing and we just thank and praise God for the miracle that He has blessed us with.
