100 Good Wishes Quilt

To welcome and celebrate a new life, there is a tradition in northern China to make a Bai Jia Bei, or 100 Good Wishes Quilt.  It is a custom to invite 100 people to contribute a single square patch of cloth. The 100 patches are sewn together into a quilt that contains the luck, energy, and good wishes from all the families and friends who contributed a piece of fabric. The quilt is then passed down from generation to generation.  Many of you had been invited to participate in the Bai Jia Bei we were making for Julia.  I am so happy to share with you that the quilt is finished!

Bai Jia Bei

Isn’t it beautiful?  I am so thankful to my mother-in-law for quilting it for us and to all of you who contributed.  It means so much to have so many people eagerly awaiting our daughter’s arrival.  The four squares from our family make up the four corners - have fun finding your square!  I am still working on the album that houses all your wishes, but that is almost complete too.

The red Sing-a-ma-jig and small pink blanket in the picture are part of a care package we are preparing to send to Julia.  More on that later…
