Rites of Passage

In the past several weeks, Emily has:

  • outgrown almost all her clothes
  • learned to ride her bike without training wheels
  • gotten her first loose tooth (it’s been almost 2 weeks now and it is still hangin’ in there)
  • learned to whistle
  • gone on her first sleepover at a friend’s house

How is it possible that my little girl, my firstborn, is one month away from first grade and is steadily ticking off the to-do list of “growing up” milestones?  I am so proud of the young lady she is becoming, and in growing up she is also teaching me an important lesson – that it really does go by so fast.

So – it’s ok to let the laundry sit while playing a card game with Emily and Norah.  It’s ok for clothes to get covered in ice cream as the price of getting the huge smiles that come with it.  It’s ok to sit in the rocking chair with Julia night after night, hour after hour…because soon enough she will be checking off her own “growing up” to-do list and I will miss the days where I sat with my limbs shaking from fatigue (she is over 25 lbs now!) waiting for her eyes to close and her breath to become deep and even.  Now I just need to do a better job of remembering this.

Indeed my friend.  I feel the same way.  They do grow up so fast.  I catch my self every so often holding back tears as I reflect on how much they have grown.  May the Lord bless your journey of parenthood.
